Maximizing Courageous Joy with Kristin Crockett and Caryl Derenfeld

I am so excited to welcome my dear friend Caryl Derenfeld, the heart and soul behind Joy Filled Souls, to this powerful conversation all about choosing JOY on purpose. Caryl has this incredible gift for helping people reconnect with laughter, presence, and the kind of self-care that truly shifts your spirit. Through her practice of Laughter Yoga and other creative tools, she shows us how joy isn’t something we stumble upon—it’s something we can actually create and live into every single day.

In our conversation, we dive into the inspiration behind Caryl’s work, and we share stories (and a few laughs!) about what happens when you give yourself permission to let go of stress and lean into joy. We also talk about our upcoming retreat designed to help you maximize joy—an experience that combines laughter, mindfulness, and courageous self-care so you can feel lighter, more present, and more alive.

This episode is your reminder that joy is not a luxury—it’s essential. And when you choose it courageously, you don’t just change your day… you change your destiny.

Takeaways:

  • The podcast emphasizes the importance of balancing stress with self-care to cultivate joy.
  • Laughter Yoga, as described, combines the physical act of laughter with yogic breathing techniques.

Foreign.

Speaker B:

And welcome to the courageous destiny build a business and life you love podcast.

Speaker B:

I am your hostess, Kristen Crockett, and I am honored and elated to have Carol Darren Feld, owner and facilitator at Joy fueled Souls.

Speaker B:

Carol, welcome to my show.

Speaker A:

Hello.

Speaker B:

Goodness.

Speaker B:

Oh my goodness.

Speaker B:

You have to come back on though.

Speaker B:

I won't be able to talk without you on.

Speaker A:

I am going on here.

Speaker A:

I am.

Speaker B:

Okay, good, good.

Speaker B:

You guys, we're gonna keep rolling with this because this has just been funny.

Speaker B:

I've had like three outtakes, you know, getting Carol's name right.

Speaker B:

And I know her.

Speaker B:

Do you believe it?

Speaker B:

I know her.

Speaker B:

It's so great that I'm having a problem and I know somebody is it.

Speaker B:

Let's, let's all take a, let's all take a five second celebration of what it is like to be human.

Speaker B:

So I, I gotta tell you guys, I am really honored to have Carol here.

Speaker B:

me in October of this year of:

Speaker B:

And no matter what time you're listening to this podcast, I will tell you, we will be doing more.

Speaker B:

And this, this, this retreat is going to be all about maximizing joy.

Speaker B:

So we're gonna laugh a lot on this podcast and hopefully we're you to laugh a lot on this podcast.

Speaker B:

And I am just so excited to have all of us together.

Speaker B:

Carol, tell us about you.

Speaker B:

Tell, tell us about you.

Speaker A:

Well, let's see.

Speaker A:

What's the first thing I can tell you about me?

Speaker A:

e actually, back in the early:

Speaker A:

And it has morphed over the years into what is now Joy Field Souls, which is facilitating programming mainly to calm the body, mind and spirit and to add joy into, into everyone's life.

Speaker A:

We live in very stressful times and this is something I said years ago and it still fits today.

Speaker A:

And we have to balance the stress of everyday life with self care.

Speaker A:

And part of self care is creating more joy and laughter and a sense of peace within our souls.

Speaker A:

So that is what you and I are going to be doing at this retreat on October 11th.

Speaker A:

It's what I put out into the world and it comes back to me in spades.

Speaker A:

It's a wonderful way to part, participate in life.

Speaker B:

I can't agree more.

Speaker B:

And I remember, I remember when we first met, there was a lot of joy right off the jump because, well, the first day we met, our backs were to each other.

Speaker B:

Our backs were to each other.

Speaker B:

And I'm like, and then I heard, all I heard was laughter yoga.

Speaker B:

And I went, who's Laughter Yoga?

Speaker B:

Oh, she's right behind me.

Speaker B:

Laughter yoga.

Speaker B:

That sounds like fun.

Speaker B:

I'm like, I could have that in a courageous destiny event.

Speaker B:

Like, that's perfect because we always want to be elevating, elevating our vibe as much as possible.

Speaker B:

You know, we don't think that we could actually find joy in everyday things when we're like, I like to say, growing through it.

Speaker B:

You know, we're always growing through it in our lives.

Speaker B:

And, and you know, there usually isn't a day or two that goes by without some kind of contrast that, that isn't necessarily unicorns and rainbows.

Speaker B:

And so elevating is so important.

Speaker B:

I'm like, I've been to yoga and I love yoga and I usually think of yoga as serenity and I think of yoga as like I, I get a, the cloth of lavender right at the end and I think, o, you know, I'm like.

Speaker B:

But I didn't think of it as laughter.

Speaker B:

And that really, really sparked me.

Speaker B:

And then we didn't get a chance to meet at that event.

Speaker B:

But then the next day or the next event, it was not very far after that.

Speaker A:

No, it wasn't.

Speaker B:

I was speaking and I go to sit down and it was, it was at a yoga studio of all places.

Speaker B:

So I was sitting down on, on a big, on a big pillow and I rolled into you and I'm like, well, I guess we're supposed to be literally rolling into you.

Speaker A:

Exactly.

Speaker A:

So.

Speaker A:

So for your listeners that are not familiar with Laughter Yoga, I, if I could, I'd like to give a little, I would love that explanation.

Speaker A:

So I found laughter yoga in:

Speaker A:

I think I said:

Speaker A:

And in:

Speaker A:

I like to laugh.

Speaker A:

I like yoga.

Speaker A:

Combine them.

Speaker A:

What could be bad?

Speaker A:

So I contacted a man who was interested in training a bunch of people and his name is Sebastian Gendry.

Speaker A:

But the founder of Laughter Yoga.

Speaker A:

And Sebastian did a great job and it was a two day training, it was wonderful.

Speaker A:

But the founder of Laughter Yoga is a man named Madan Kataria who was an internist in India and he was studying the effects of humor on the body and he Gathered some people in a park and invited them to tell jokes and laugh.

Speaker A:

So quickly he discovered that laughter and humor are two very separate things.

Speaker A:

Humor is cerebral and laughter is physical throughout the body.

Speaker A:

Cerebral because what makes one person laugh might be different than what makes another person laugh.

Speaker A:

But the response to the humor is laughter, which is universal, which transcends religion, it transcends language, it transcends everything and it really brings people together.

Speaker A:

Jay Leno once said, if you laugh with someone, odds are you're not going to kill them.

Speaker A:

So it is true, I think, and I concur, yes.

Speaker A:

And I wound up meeting Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga, a couple of years later and got trained to be a teacher, meaning as opposed to a leader.

Speaker A:

A leader.

Speaker A:

I could just lead laughter groups, a teacher, as I could train other people to be Laughter Yoga leaders.

Speaker A:

So that was a wonderful experience.

Speaker A:

The laughter yoga combines the yogic notion of breath.

Speaker A:

A lot of times people think of yoga and they think of the asanas, they think of all the different positions that people do, the warrior pose, the mountain pose, etc.

Speaker A:

But it's really about inhalations and exhalations and then combine that with laughter and you, when you're hahaha and you're expelling that stagnant air that's in your lungs and then taking in fresh air and laughter.

Speaker A:

Yoga utilizes improvisational methods to get laughter going.

Speaker A:

We don't use language, we don't use joke telling.

Speaker A:

We are physically clapping, doing different movements, and it just becomes a whole experience within that laughter circle that exists.

Speaker A:

And it's something that I have found joyous.

Speaker A:

It is something that is uplifting.

Speaker A:

Originally, having started it with older adults, the comments I got from them, them was, oh, I was having trouble breathing and then I started laughing.

Speaker A:

And all of a sudden, not that it's miraculous and you know, they could let go of their oxygen, but they felt better because endorphins are kicking in and you're relaxing.

Speaker A:

That's the body's natural relaxation method.

Speaker A:

And they are relaxing, they're feeling better.

Speaker A:

I went on from doing small groups of seniors to going to conferences.

Speaker A:

I had been to social work conferences in Alabama, weight loss conferences in California, and I had over a thousand people in the audience and still was able to resonate with these laughter exercises.

Speaker A:

And it's incredible what it does to your psyche.

Speaker A:

I had one woman at the end of one of these larger events.

Speaker A:

I always ask people, how did you feel from when you started to how you feel now?

Speaker A:

And one woman stood up and said, I have not laughed since my child died a short time ago.

Speaker A:

And she said, today I laughed.

Speaker A:

And I used to be in choir, but I stopped going to choir when, after my child died.

Speaker A:

Today I laughed.

Speaker A:

Tomorrow I will sing.

Speaker B:

Oh, my gosh.

Speaker B:

That just so I was like, you.

Speaker A:

Know, if I could do a mic drop at that point, I would have done a mic drop and I would have walked away.

Speaker A:

Because you can't create those kinds of comments.

Speaker A:

They come from the soul.

Speaker A:

So laughter yoga, why, while it may sound like fluff to some, it is such a deep, meaningful activity.

Speaker A:

And if somebody is fortunate enough to be able to do this every day or to do it on a regular basis, on a weekly basis, couple times a week, it is a powerful salve to our souls.

Speaker B:

I love what you're saying and what's really coming to me.

Speaker B:

You know, even in courageous destiny world, like, I'm always about raising and elevating your vine, which is why I bring forward a lot of gratitude practices and a lot of gratitude work.

Speaker B:

Because when you're creating your life or you have big things that you're going for in life, results, you know, oriented, whether it be, I'm opening up a business, I want to find my life purpose.

Speaker B:

I want to, you know, find the next love of my life.

Speaker B:

A lot of times people come from this kind of sad state or like a missing state, like a lack state, and they try to create their lives from that state.

Speaker B:

And what I love about what you're saying, you know, it's.

Speaker B:

It's reaffirming because laughter can elevate you to see something that you wouldn't have seen before.

Speaker B:

And because you're stuck in the mud, you know, I kind of look at it like if my face is in the mud, I can't see what to do next because I'm.

Speaker B:

I'm not, you know, I'm blinded by that, you know, emotionally intellectual, like all of it.

Speaker B:

I'm just st And I'm stuck.

Speaker B:

But doing something like laughter, doing something like what we're going to do in the maximizing joy event, you know, gratitude practices, courageous gratitude practices and learning different things to really elevate, you know, elevate and feel real great.

Speaker B:

I am so excited to see what kind of miracles are going to come.

Speaker B:

Come from that, from the attendees, like the next day.

Speaker B:

Like, I'm going to do this thing or, you know, one perspective shift can change everything.

Speaker B:

But what we're going to do is we're going to give them a bomb of joy.

Speaker A:

Yeah, well, we have, we have the laughter.

Speaker A:

And I think, yeah, one of the reasons why you and I are doing this together is that we both believe that what we offer affects us physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.

Speaker A:

And I can say that laughter positively touches on all those things.

Speaker A:

Some of the other things that we're going to be doing at this event, the Chocolate Meditation is.

Speaker A:

And the stillness is not idleness.

Speaker A:

Both of those reflect on the fact that slowing down and being quiet is not a negative and not a laziness.

Speaker A:

It is essential to be able to hear your own voice and to be able to move forward, enjoy and move forward in positive progress.

Speaker B:

I'm, I'm really excited about it because I see the way it's all being mapped out now, you know, and Raness too, that will be coming ranis o' her with, you know, from life maps to help us remember all of our great memories and all our delicious memories and all of those things.

Speaker B:

Things.

Speaker B:

And what we're doing is we're showing different ways to maximize joy, to bring joy in.

Speaker B:

And if you're listening to this and you're like, well, what's this retreat?

Speaker B:

I'm going to go ahead and have that in the show notes for you guys to be able to download.

Speaker B:

But if you're like, I don't want to go on a retreat, I just want to maximize my joy, well, let me tell you about some ways to do that because I think that would be incredible if we could, we could share some of those things.

Speaker B:

So first of all, just having the idea to laugh more.

Speaker B:

Wouldn't you agree, Kara?

Speaker A:

Absolutely, absolutely.

Speaker A:

And I think the other message is slow down.

Speaker A:

For women particularly, and I think women who are juggling work and children and elderly parents, there's this whole balance issue that it's usually you, the caregiver that's losing out because you're expending so much energy.

Speaker A:

But take a moment and be silent and savor life.

Speaker A:

That is what the Chocolate Meditation is.

Speaker A:

That is what laughter Yoga is.

Speaker A:

That is kindness given and kindness received.

Speaker A:

All those things are what this event is going to be about and what we need to remember in our daily lives.

Speaker A:

I think, Kristen, if you and I get feedback from people, which we will of course, maybe a week down the line and say, how are you doing now?

Speaker A:

What have you reflected upon since you've come to this event?

Speaker A:

I expect great comments.

Speaker A:

I'm not expecting that people are going to be like, oh, my life has totally changed and I'm a different person.

Speaker A:

No, but if there's a 5% difference.

Speaker A:

In my positive psychology class, I learned about a Japanese word called kaizen.

Speaker A:

Kaizen, change.

Speaker A:

Just 5% difference can have a significant impact on how you live your life.

Speaker A:

So that's my goal.

Speaker A:

5% difference.

Speaker B:

Well, and what I see, and I love the name of your, your, your company, by the way.

Speaker B:

Joy.

Speaker B:

Joy fueled souls.

Speaker B:

Because to me, you're giving yourself momentum.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker B:

So I'm always talking about one year to her courageous destiny and one year to her courageous destiny.

Speaker B:

Part of a segment of that program is momentum.

Speaker B:

And it's not what people think.

Speaker B:

Like where it's all hustle, hustle, hustle.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

It's how do I fuel myself and feel amazing and keep moving forward one step at a time with consistent action.

Speaker B:

Consistent, not hustle action.

Speaker B:

And it's about joy.

Speaker B:

It's about bringing more joy in.

Speaker B:

It's about not looking at things in such a negative.

Speaker B:

You know, a lot of people said, well, I'm not going to look at my life with rose colored glasses.

Speaker B:

Well, don't look at them with puke colored glasses either.

Speaker B:

Right, right, right.

Speaker A:

So I don't want anybody to think that really, as you said, that they're going to go out and have rose colored glasses every day.

Speaker A:

I don't want people to think they.

Speaker B:

Would need to practice that, but they could.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

But I say something, I don't want people to think that.

Speaker A:

It's like, oh, Carol, you're a laughter yoga leader, so you're laughing and happy all the time.

Speaker A:

No, I am not.

Speaker A:

But because I'm a human being and nobody is up and positive all the time, but I have the tools to be resilient.

Speaker A:

And then if I do have a down time, I know that I can bounce back to joy.

Speaker A:

And I think that is the purpose of what you do in creating destiny.

Speaker A:

And it is the purpose of what I do in the, in the programs that I offer.

Speaker A:

And it's what we want to give to all of you that are listening.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

And you know, it's when I think of one perspective shift, when I think of even the woman being that you described being able to sing again the next day.

Speaker B:

Like going to sing.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Though it might seem small, those things can be really big if you start incorporating them on purpose into, you know, first of all, just one perspective shift can go from.

Speaker B:

I don't have that thing do.

Speaker B:

I do have that thing.

Speaker B:

Because you finally have the courage to go and get it, and you finally have the insight to go out and get it.

Speaker B:

So I definitely expect to have some really cool things that people get that they wouldn't even even expected, that they didn't even know that they wanted, that they weren't even.

Speaker B:

It wasn't even on their radar.

Speaker B:

And then I also expect that anybody who, who goes to this retreat or who's listening to this podcast, you know, to be able to start practicing laughter on purpose, to be.

Speaker B:

To start practicing joy on purpose, even in.

Speaker B:

Even in the toughest of situations.

Speaker B:

You know, I think of.

Speaker B:

I talk about this a lot, but a lot of times, like I say, like one of my famous sayings in courageous destiny is, I am the master creator of my own courageous destiny.

Speaker B:

I also like to say empowered by God, but that's really up to that person.

Speaker B:

But I am the master creator of my own courageous destiny, which means that I get to create my life from the inside out.

Speaker B:

I don't have to look at what everybody else is doing and what everything else is out here.

Speaker B:

I get to create from the inside out versus will they give me permission to create my life now from the.

Speaker B:

That would be the outside in.

Speaker B:

And when we're generating a lot of joy, we have a lot more courage to do that.

Speaker A:

Yes, yes.

Speaker B:

You know, it's not easy to do.

Speaker A:

And I think underlying this discussion is we.

Speaker A:

And this is paraphrasing something that we've seen all over social media and in books.

Speaker A:

And we do not have the ability to control what comes our way, but we do have the ability to decide how we will respond.

Speaker A:

And so through these different exercises, through a daily experience in gratitude, through a daily experience of journaling, we can write down our thoughts and feelings, we can express ourselves, we can bounce back.

Speaker A:

A very big yogic concept is the concept of beginning again.

Speaker A:

So you go to bed at night, maybe you say prayers, whatever, you kiss your person and you go to bed and you wake up and you start a new day.

Speaker A:

So the yoga concept is you always have an opportunity to begin again.

Speaker A:

So if you did something and it didn't turn out great, or if you felt like you failed or, you know, you had some negative thing, it's now a new day, it's now a new moment, and I can begin again.

Speaker B:

And if you get that, if you.

Speaker A:

Get one of that simple concept in.

Speaker B:

Your head.

Speaker A:

You could say to yourself, that wasn't a great moment, but here's a new one.

Speaker A:

So I'm going to make this one a great moment.

Speaker B:

I'll never forget reading the book the Power of Now, and I remember being in a conversation with my coach, and I'm like, Well, I can do it now.

Speaker B:

I can do it now.

Speaker B:

I can do it now.

Speaker B:

I can do it now.

Speaker B:

Because every moment gave me this ability to begin again.

Speaker B:

And there's such a huge value in.

Speaker B:

To be able to look at your life with beginner's mind, to be able to look at your life.

Speaker B:

I sometimes I call it the courageous destiny restart, you know, and just to be able to.

Speaker B:

To really be fresh in that.

Speaker B:

So thank you for bringing that forward.

Speaker B:

And, Carol, we could talk for hours, because we always do.

Speaker B:

And I just.

Speaker B:

You guys, I love this lady so much.

Speaker B:

She's amazing.

Speaker B:

I would love.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Feelings mutual.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I would love, love, love to find out.

Speaker B:

I asked two questions for every member on my podcast.

Speaker B:

Number one, what is the most courageous thing that you've ever done?

Speaker A:

Oof.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker A:

What is the most courageous thing I've ever done?

Speaker A:

I have to pick just one, huh?

Speaker B:

Well, yes, on that or too short?

Speaker A:

The most courageous thing I've ever done is when I failed at college.

Speaker A:

It took a long time, but I got back and I went back to college later in my life and graduated with honors.

Speaker B:

I love that.

Speaker B:

I love that.

Speaker A:

Took a long time, but I did.

Speaker A:

And I think that was a very courageous thing, because I could have just said, oh, forget about it, but I'm very proud of that moment.

Speaker A:

And I was the first person in my family to graduate from college, so that was very exciting.

Speaker A:

And I beat my daughter by two years.

Speaker B:

All right.

Speaker A:

She graduated three years later.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

You know, it never ceases to amaze me the different things that I have that come up just by asking that question.

Speaker B:

So thank you for sharing.

Speaker A:

And then, great question.

Speaker B:

The second question that I have is, what is the most courageous thing you have left to do on your bucket list?

Speaker A:

Mm.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker A:

Well, simply put, I take it out of my comfort zone, and that.

Speaker A:

And that.

Speaker A:

That snowballs into so many different things.

Speaker A:

Try to do things that are outside of my comfort zone.

Speaker A:

Are you asking me to be specific?

Speaker B:

No, I think that that works.

Speaker B:

I think that that works.

Speaker B:

It can be however you want to answer the question.

Speaker B:

And I think that I love to tell people, like, or.

Speaker B:

I love to coach people or guide people to.

Speaker B:

The more you do that, the bigger the things get that are outside your.

Speaker B:

Your.

Speaker B:

Your.

Speaker B:

Your comfort zone starts expanding.

Speaker B:

The more brave things that you do and the more courageous things that you do.

Speaker B:

And so I think that intentionally doing that is amazing.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker A:

And now I have the song from Brave in my head.

Speaker A:

I'm singing it in my head.

Speaker A:

I don't want to upset Anybody.

Speaker A:

So I won't sing out loud.

Speaker B:

Well, we wouldn't mind a laugh.

Speaker A:

Yes.

Speaker A:

Laughing I can do.

Speaker A:

You know, I used to do a.

Speaker A:

There used to be a laughter phone call where you'd call this 800 number.

Speaker A:

I don't have it anymore.

Speaker A:

And I don't know if anybody's doing it, any of the laughter leaders that I know around the world.

Speaker A:

But you literally called in, and all you heard was, ha.

Speaker B:

You have no choice but to laugh.

Speaker A:

Ten minutes of laughter.

Speaker A:

And it was incredible.

Speaker A:

First of all, it was exhausting to laugh for 10 minutes.

Speaker A:

But, my God, when you're done with that, it's just like, oof.

Speaker A:

I feel a little lighter in my.

Speaker A:

In my heart and soul.

Speaker A:

And I'm gonna go about my day.

Speaker A:

So I'll give one recommendation for how you laugh alone.

Speaker A:

A lot of people say I can't laugh alone.

Speaker A:

I'm not, you know.

Speaker A:

Yes, you can.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker A:

Every morning, you get up, you go do the things you need to do.

Speaker A:

When you get out of bed, you go into the bathroom, you do some things.

Speaker B:

You.

Speaker A:

Maybe you get in the shower.

Speaker A:

Get in the shower, come out of the shower, you wrap yourself in your towel, go over to the mirror, unwrap that towel, drop it, and if that doesn't make you laugh, I don't know what will.

Speaker A:

And then you can begin your day.

Speaker A:

My other recommendation is often when I do laughter sessions, I.

Speaker A:

And I like to.

Speaker A:

I do like to sing, and I like to sing as part of the laughter exercises because it is just another way to express joy.

Speaker A:

And one of the songs I sing, people of my generation would know it.

Speaker A:

It's the song Beautiful by Carole King and May I?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face and show the world all the love in your heart.

Speaker A:

People gonna treat you better.

Speaker A:

You're gonna find.

Speaker A:

Yes, you will.

Speaker A:

That you're beautiful as you feel.

Speaker B:

I love that.

Speaker B:

You know what?

Speaker B:

We're gonna find a link to that, and we're gonna put that in the show notes of the podcast.

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

So people can listen.

Speaker B:

And it will cause.

Speaker B:

One of my favorite things to do is cause a chain reaction.

Speaker B:

And that's what Courageous does to do all about.

Speaker A:

And those lyrics, those lyrics of that refrain are a great way to start your day.

Speaker B:

Well, Carol, thank you so much for coming on my show.

Speaker B:

And I have to tell everybody one more time, I'm going to go ahead and shamelessly plug it.

Speaker B:

And we have this wonderful retreat that Carol and I have put together and assembled and will be facilitating on October 11th in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Speaker B:

We will also have links to how you can register to that in the show notes.

Speaker B:

We would love to have you guys there.

Speaker A:

She started in corporate tech sales, for 22 years she beat the big boys and became one of the TOP level female executives earning a very nice 6-figure paycheck. Then one day, she just took the plunge, she then focused on her health and her wealth. She lost over 85 pounds and became a Deserve Level Coach™ helping women increase their revenue, sales and take giant leaps forward in life.
